DIY: Coasters

So I made some coasters today. We planned on getting an IKEA wood coffee table (which we did get) and I worried about condensation so when we were perusing counters and such at the re-store (donated building supplies for renos, profits to Habitat for Humanity) we saw some awesome tiles and got some to make into coasters. Here's how to do it:

Materials:
  • tiles or some other water resistant tough material

  • glue gun

  • shelf liner (I used non adhesive), non skid bubbly kind

  • scissors

Process:
  1. cut square of shelf liner
  2. glue to tile
  3. have many jealous friends

Cheers! I can't wait to have friends over and show them off.

Oops...

So our first anniversary is on Sunday. J bought my gift for me this morning and hid it... kind of in plain sight. I walked into the bathroom and was looking for the cleaning sponge for the stove and there it was (we had talked about it before :P) Then he tells me, you're not supposed to go in there. And I told him, "you should have told me that before I saw it".

So I got my gift today. It's a Razer Blackwidow mechanical keyboard. I love the click click click while I type. I predict it will drive him crazy sooner rather than later. I know if it was his keyboard, it would drive me nuts most of the time.

Since it's only fair, we went out to Best Buy and he picked his gift too. He got a 2 TB external HD :) We love computers.

The Game of Life

So can you tell who won below?

It's not easy to tell who won without knowing the amount of money that they had right? Wrong! In my world, white won (when it was really green who had the most money). Why you ask? Because white had a family. Nuff said.

P.S. I played by myself. Green was a tennis ball (green dog toy), orange was an orange binder, and white was the bottom of the box lid. It was interesting. These are the things I do when I'm on summer break.

Depressed

I'm feeling so depressed and stressed out about work. I'm not supposed to be this stressed out at the end of the work year. I have half a day left tomorrow and then it's summer. I've got to have some tough conversations tomorrow so that I don't have all this stress weighing down on me.

Vancouver Pizza

My favourite memory of the playoffs is that Boston Pizza (my favourite restaurant) renamed themselves Vancouver Pizza in BC. Here is an article about it.

Thought it was done

I know this is my third post for the day but I don't like to clump.

With my evaluation last week came questions as to why these things happened and comments as to how I thought it was unfair.

I was TOTALLY dumped on. No one took the time to give me a heads up earlier in the year so I got dumped on about all the things I've been doing badly on this year, right in the last two weeks.

My hours got cut from 80% to 50% and I feel like I'm on probation. I'm pretty sure I am. However, it's the principal who apparently decided my work assignment for me next year.

I've got a dilemma now because I'm not satisfied with my hours and the explanations given to me, but it's hard to approach him with this now because his wife just passed away yesterday from cancer and he's not around. I would never approach him in person with all that I know he's got going on but I know I need to take it to him now.

I've decided that if I need to keep my personal life outside of work by putting on a happy face no matter what's going on with me, then I need to realize that, pain or not, I have to take this to him because it's part of his job as well.

I'm going to take time to draft an email to him and email it when the timing feels appropriate so he can take his time getting back to me. I just can't go through a whole year filled with resentment and regret because I didn't follow though.

An ally

You don't realize how important it is to feel like you have an ally at work until you feel like you don't have one. I thought I was okay with one lady I work with, but after hearing comments from my bosses today, I'm not so sure.

These last two weeks have just been dishing me all I can handle. I've definitely had some bad thoughts and I don't know, maybe I will revisit the idea of perhaps needing anti-depressants or something with my doctor. I mean, there has to be some reason that people are finding me rude and distant when I don't feel like I am, right?

Just a lovely load to be dumped on me right at the end of the school year.

Camera

I know we just moved downstairs but my camera is still packed in a bag somewhere and I'm too lazy to find it. I will upload pics when I find it.

Pretty Background

I finally went to Hot Bliggity Blog and got myself a new background. What do you think? This one was under a tag called "summer".

Summer Sun

First sunburn of the year. I am NOT impressed. It hurts... It's only a small circle burn on the back of my neck from my shirt neck line.

Thought of the day

On our craigslist like site, I just saw an advertisement where someone felt the need to write that it was a colour tv. I mean, how often do you find a black and white tv nowadays. I'm positive there probably was never a 22 inch black and white tv anyways. Lol!

This is what free looks like. Yeah that's right... websaver.ca I LOVE YOU!

I'm a tease

Hehe, I auto posted the last two posts. I've been crazy busy and barely have taken a picture for myself, let alone taken one and uploaded it to here. We moved our entire kitchen on Saturday, our bedroom on Saturday too, and our computer room on Sunday.

The bed is soooooper comfy! I hope to upload pictures today. But then again, there's still tons of unpacking to do.

I'm sad though, we lost one bag of our wedding gifts. I hope it's somewhere in the house but I have no idea if someone might have thrown it out or what. It had a huge number of serving kitchen utensils in it and I need it :( It also had a few other things including an interesting mitten from my grandma that lets us both put one hand in so that we can hold hands and keep them warm.

Extreme Couponing

Crazy show...

In Canada, it's just not the same as the U.S. I would love to be able to buy thousands of dollars of items for just a fraction of the retail cost.

However, in my research (and with some help), I've found some websites to order coupons from. If you live in Canada, and are interested in saving some money on everyday things, here are the sites:

I have a bunch of coupons just waiting to be used and I can't wait to have the storage space to be able to keep all our stuff.

Thought of the day

How come the example printing on kids learning books etc. is always so perfect looking?

Friday 17 June 2011

Kindle

Love em! Get one. But if you have a smartphone, don't bother getting the 3G one. Even if you don't have a smartphone, it's still not worth the $50 to get 3G imo. Buy all your books online and send em to your computer while you're home. If you have your smartphone you can turn your phone into a wireless access point and use that to go buy a new book if you need to. Or you can always find one of the billions of Starbucks with their free Wifis.

Kindle still can't replace a paper book sometimes but it's much easier to read when you can change the font sizes. Don't go Sony, don't go Nook, don't go Kobo. Go KINDLE!

IT'S DONE!

Does anyone want to see our new kitchen? It's MOVING DAY! I'll post a picture later if anyone is interested  :P

Well, we're just moving from upstairs to downstairs but still.

This is where we slept last night.

On the floor
On our king sized mattress, still wrapped in plastic, with no bed, and queen sized bedding
Closet clothes piled on the ground
Dressers in the closet
Bookshelves with dad's records taking up part of the room

We had to move out of our room by Thurs evening because dad was getting our old bedroom recarpeted. At least we didn't have to move our computer stuff into the bedroom too.

Pet Peeve

One of my biggest pet peeves (situational of course) is texters and talkers in the movie theatre...

Check out this link here: http://beta.news.yahoo.com/blogs/lookout/texas-movie-theater-makes-example-psa-texting-audience-170925090.html

I laughed at this. I hope this lady's friends recognize her voice and mock her forever.

It's so irritating to be in a movie that you've paid good money for and to be distracted by phones lighting up in front of you as people are texting.

To people who say "I can ignore it, it doesn't bother me," I say:

Maybe you can ignore the light in front of you and it doesn't bother you, but there are many more people who are bothered by it. If someone was talking on their phone in front of you and people told you to just ignore it, wouldn't you still be annoyed and wouldn't it take away from your movie experience? Would you be upset that you paid good money to see a movie that was ruined for you?

Wednesday 15 June 2011

Bruins won :(

The Canucks didn't really deserve it over the last few games however and they got beaten 4-0 tonight. That sucked. Oh well, maybe they'll make it next year.

Renos = mess

Our house is a MESS. Because we're living with my parents we haven't been able to use most of our wedding gifts from last year. It's all in the living room and the living room upstairs is barely useable.

This is upstairs. The neatest place... Our bedroom and computer room are total messes as well but that's just from not tidying up after ourselves.

Emotions

My evaluation isn't until 9:30 and my eyes are tearing up. I don't know how I will get through it without crying.
There aren't many people I can talk to. I don't want to hear how I should take it as constructive criticism because it's just hard to get an evaluation like this.

C'mon Canucks...

... get the cup. I hope that if Luongo starts, that he doesn't fail like 3 out of the last 4 games. They scored a total of 12 goals on him within 2 games and I know he got pulled last game but I stopped watching so I'm not sure the end score.

Tuesday 14 June 2011

Bad moment or bad day?

Yeah I'm gonna say that this bad moment made my whole day bad.

I get the dreaded evaluation tomorrow morning at work. I requested that it be moved to next year given the stress that this year has put on me and the fact that I know I'm not at my best. I got an email this morning stating that it's out of their control and that it will have to be tomorrow. My mom brought home my paper evaluation.

I just didn't expect my evaluation to be this bad. I expected some understanding from my bosses who know everything that I've been through this year with my grandpa and dog dying, my miscarriage and the extremely tough situation with one of the students I work with.

I got one E for exceeding, a few M's for meeting, and a ton of I's for needing improvement. I was evaluated my first year and it was almost the polar opposite of this year. I think I only had one I, and the rest were split like 50/50 between E and M.

Let's see how the meeting goes tomorrow. I'm not impressed. I feel betrayed, disrespected and that there was a lack of professionalism (sending it home with my mom).

The love of a dog

This is my Elvis dog. He's a purebred Pomeranian and was born in Sept 2009. He's so adorable and loves the attention from us. When we go out, we crate him so he doesn't chew everything.

He's chewed:
  • camera cord
  • nintendo DS cord
  • socks
  • sandals
  • underwear... (mine)
  • kleenex
  • random paper
  • and of course dog toys

We got him in October, when he was 13 months old. We found him on a craigslist like site and got him for $250. He was such a catch but he seems like he's part dog, part cat, part rabbit. He can jump and get something hanging over a counter at our waist height.

Rabbit: uber jumps
Dog: loves attention
Cat: skittish and scared of strangers and other dogs most of the time. He's interested in them until they pay attention to him and then he bolts.

He used to be scared of the car but once we let him ride in the car outside of a kennel, he stopped being scared. He loves to "go for a ride" now and we take him anywhere we can. Unfortunately we will stop taking him except when we're only going to places that he can come into because it's almost summer and we don't want him to suffocate in a hot car.

He sleeps on the bed with us most nights and curls up on our legs or between them. To wake us up, he climbs up on top of us, lays down and licks inside our ears. That wakes us quickly.

My favourite time of day is when I come home after work or from anywhere else and he gets so excited. He bounces when we come in the door and his tail never stops wagging.

We were painting all weekend and Elvis sat outside the door whining for a long time. He spent a lot of time in the room on the other side of the door and when I opened the door, he was SO excited to see me. It was almost like I'd been gone for a week.

Monday 13 June 2011

My new word

I invented a word. It is: primer

Wait, you say, that's not a new word. Yes, yes it is. The way I use it, it is. It means to paint with primer. Also used as primering, primered.

Can you tell we painted all weekend? I have painting on the brain!

Go read this pronto!

Alex over at First Time Twins posted about miscarriages and Planned Parenthood on Thursday and I thought it was a great post. It's not something that I EVER would have though to write about. Here is the link to the post.

Thought of the day

Well, considering it takes so much time to conceive... this blog is probably going to be about what's going on in my life until I become preggers... I hope that's alright...

Renovations

Our renovations are almost finished. My parents are renovating their basement and turning it into a suite for us to rent from them. The drywallers took over a week to get things finished and finally we were able to paint today.

Pretty sure we spent about the equivalent of an 8 hour work day, painting. Wow... that's a lot of paint.

However, I painted two coats on our master bedroom by myself and it looks awesome. The last two times I painted, I painted my bedrooms in the two houses that we lived in, in this city. My dad helped me do that and I remember him nagging me to slow down, use more paint, use less paint, catch the drips, etc. This time, his only comments were on a few drips after the fact but there's not much I can do then.

Here are some "semi" before pictures.

Friday 10 June 2011

Well, they did it...

The Canucks managed to win 1-0 tonight. Now the series is 3-2 for them. They just need to win one more game to get the Stanley Cup.

Thursday 9 June 2011

I should still be a kid...

I love kids movies...

Does Pixar REALLY cater to children or is that just something they want you to think?

I can't WAIT for Cars 2.

I love:
  • Wall-e
  • Up
  • Cars
  • Finding Nemo
  • Monsters Inc.
  • The Incredibles

Not so much love for:
  • A Bug's Life (it's okay...)
  • Toy Story 1, 2, 3

And I still need to see Ratatouille...

Wish List Wednesday: IKEA Edition

It's that time again! This week I'm doing what I want from IKEA. I know I just went there on May 28th but I still have things I want because I couldn't buy them or didn't know about them.

1. BESTÃ…
Shelf unit in black-brown
We've already got one of these but it's almost full. This matches our current living room colour scheme and I would love to have like 3 more of these because we can also put them in the bedroom as our bedroom furniture is black-brown too.

2. EXPEDIT
Bookcase in pretty much any colour
I especially want a LOT of these because I'm planning on using this type of shelf with the cloth drawers for storage in a baby room.

3. GÃ…SER
Rug, high pile in blue-grey.
It would match our bedding perfectly!

4. EKTORP TULLSTA
Armchair in black or white
This would go nicely in a corner of our bedroom near a nice big mirror.

5.  BYHOLMA
Chest in grey
or
KOMPLEMENT
Interior chest of drawers in black-brown
I would put this at the foot of the bed for storage.

Good luck Canucks!

Well, they got their butts kicked on Monday 8-1... that was kinda pathetic.

One of our defensemen (Rome) tripped Horton from the Bruins and he went flying backwards onto his back on the ice. He got rushed to the hospital and has a severe concussion I think. He will be out for the rest of the series.

Rome got suspended from the rest of the series and if the series doesn't play all 7 games, he's looking at being suspended from some of the first games in the next season.

I don't think he meant to check him as hard as he did and I don't agree with the fact that he got suspended. I'm sure most of the guys who play have done things they shouldn't have and we don't see them getting banned for 4 games for it.

On a happier note, the 5 minute power play that the Bruins got as a result of the collision in game was shut down by Luongo and the Canucks. They didn't manage to score on them until they got 8 goals between the 2nd and 3rd periods...

Good luck tomorrow guys!

Cycle driving me nuts!

My cycle is driving me crazy...

If this potential AF doesn't continue, this will be the third time...

Monday 6 June 2011

Canucks lead the series 2-0!

Wow, I never was a hockey person but I guess the Olympics last year kinda got me into it with the Gold Medal final! With both Canada and the U.S. playing, I was cheering for both but rooting for Canada cuz I live here...

But seriously since the Canucks started playing for the Stanley Cup, I've missed only a few games. I can't call myself a true hockey nut of course as I probably will never watch any team except the Canucks and I will sit around doing other things while the game is on.

The last two games have been nail biters.

The first game was 0-0 the whole game until the last few minutes of the 3rd period where the Canucks scored. Wow...

In the second game, the score was 1-0 for Canucks at the end of the first period. 2-1 for the Bruins at the end of the second and 2-2 by the end of the third. The Canucks won the game 11 SECONDS into overtime. Intense!

I can only hope that they continue this streak. They haven't been this far in the Stanley Cup running since 1994 and I don't think they've ever won the cup...

Random funny thing... My friend told me that if the Nucks lost, she would be sleeping on the couch because it would be all her fault because she shaved her playoff "beard" aka her legs... lol

I hope the Nucks can do it tonight! Take it to 3-0 in Boston!

Sunday 5 June 2011

AF please show up...

... or at least give me a BFP! After last Sat, AF seemed to show but went away. I tested on Thurs and got a BFN. I took it really well. I was putting off taking a test after the miscarriage even though I wondered if my HCG ever got down low enough. I was worried about TTC and not knowing if my HCG would cause a BFP.

So I guess I'm still waiting on my first AF since my miscarriage. It looked like she may have started to show today but we will have to wait and see if she stays.

On a happier note, I found a good app for my phone that lets me chart similar to Fertility Friend. It's called Ovuview and it's for Android. I'm not sure if Apple makes one but if you search ovulation, fertility friend, ovuview or other things related to charting you probably can find a good free one.

I also received my HPTs, OPKs and BBT thermometer in the mail recently. I ordered them from early-pregnancy-tests.com. I'm so happy they're here. I can finally start Actively Trying: The Next Level.

Friday 3 June 2011

Another day...

I'm so exhausted and sick right now. We have three more weeks of work before the kids are out for the summer, then it's just a few days the following week for the adults.

At least the end of the year brings field trips and random activities.

Well, my dog is telling me it's time to leave for work. He's waiting in his crate for me to lock him in.

Wednesday 1 June 2011

GO CANUCKS!

Awesome goal right at the end against the Bruins guys. 1-0 for the Stanley Cup Finals!

Wish List Wednesday: Baby Edition

I've been reading The Foster Family blog lately and she's been doing a Wednesday Wish List post. I'm excited to write my first one. This is her image and it should link back to her page.

Just because I'm so baby crazy lately. These are 5 of the things I desperately want when we have our firstborn!

1. a HUGE cloth diaper stash!!!

2.  Ju Ju Be Be Prepared Diaper Bag: It's big enough for twins or over packing moms (like I'm sure I will be)

3. Moby Wrap

4. travel system that matches and has only 4 wheels (no double wheels like most) or else a 3 wheel jogging stroller with matching car seat

5. completely matching bedroom! all pieces... bedding, bumper, wall stickers, lamps, etc.
